A Journey Through Ocean Lines

Inspired by the dynamic and fluid nature of the sea, the design of the aquarium draws from the Lines of the Oceans—the invisible threads that define currents, depth, and topography. These lines guide our understanding of the underwater world, shaping how we experience and interpret nature’s hidden landscapes.

“A Journey Through Ocean Lines” is an immersive exploration into the rhythms and flows of the ocean. It honors the pioneering spirit of explorers like Alexander von Humboldt, whose legacy of discovery and scientific curiosity continues to inspire deeper connections between land and sea, science and story.

Programme Layout & Circulation Strategies

We believe that a modern cultural aquarium can be more than a tour of different seas, and the information learned along the path.  It can be more than a journey that ends at a shop and café. We conceived a modern building that is highly commercial, entertaining, educational and visual that will become a new icon and meeting place for Berlin. The aquarium is located within the sub-centre of Berlin, across from the Ostkreuz Train Station, one of the largest stations in Berlin.

Like the “Gulf Streams of the Ocean” the main flow of exhibitions bring you through the large exhibits of the aquarium and small eddy pockets of smaller exhibition islands that bring out unique characters and experience for each biotope.

A multipurpose area is added into the program for educational purposes and changing events. It can double as a conference space or multimedia support space. It  is primarily an educational space to showcase knowledge of the seas and its history. Here, groups of students can gather, work, learn and play for a whole day. It is an educational triangle that goes from listening (auditorium), experiencing (the tours of the aquarium) to experimenting (workshops). The opportunity to show visitors a diverse learning environment should not be missed.
